Avoid These Three Mistakes With Self Storage

Blog

Many people find themselves in need of self storage at some point in their lives. Self storage is a space that is rented to store your belongings for you. You can store anything like household goods, overflow from your garage, or even vehicles there. It can be a lifesaver for people who need time between moving out of one location to another,  inherit a large number of things, or need to extend the purpose of their own garage. Shopping for the right storage facility can be a huge undertaking. Here are three common mistakes people make and how you can avoid them:

Take Your Time Shopping

You don't need to choose the first storage facility you find. There are going to be several options in most areas and you should take the time to compare them. Read reviews and look for the opinion of other customers. Look at all the fees involved with each self storage facility you find and make sure you ask lots of questions to have accurate information. Some places will run specials that offer a free month or a discounted rate. If you think you will be using the storage unit for an extended period of time, they might give you a discount for that because it means more business for them!

Choose the Right Size Unit

Choosing the right size unit is one of the biggest mistakes people make when using self storage. Most storage places will have several size units to choose from. You need to have a general idea of how much space you need. One way you can do this is to compare your belongings to how many rooms in your house they used to fill. Similar to moving truck estimates, you can choose a unit based on household size. This won't be precise to its still better to purchase a bigger unit just in case you need the space. Moving all your stuff into a unit that is too small can be a nightmare and you may need to move it all again into a bigger unit or purchase a second unit just to fit it all!

Read the Fine Print

When you choose the storage unit you want you will receive a contract to sign. Make sure you read the fine print and learn the hours you will have the ability to access your belongings. Look for information about late fees and the consequences of missed payments.  Before you sign make sure you know what you are signing!

Use these tips to avoid issues when shopping for self storage. Do some planning and research and you can take advantage of the convenience self storage can provide!
