Advice For Protecting Your Items While They Are In A Self Storage Unit

Blog

Whether you have to place your items in a self storage unit for a few weeks or for several months, you will want to take as may possible precautions as you can in order to keep your stuff well protected.

Use Plastic Containers

Instead of using cardboard boxes that can be chewed through by rodents or fall apart from exposure to moisture, you will want to consider placing your valuable items in large plastic containers. Do make sure that you have the lids that go with them for a proper fit. Even with the lids in place, you will want to take it a step further and seal the small opening between the lid and the container itself with strong duct tape. This way, even the smallest of insects will not be able to make their way into your storage box.

Never Eat In The Unit

Even if you are not going to leave anything within the storage unit itself, you will still want to make sure that you are refraining from eating anything in there. This is because you could drop the smallest amount of crumbs without even realizing it. However, a small mouse will notice the food as it will be able to smell the food particles that you left behind. Once the mice find their way in for those crumbs, they may chew through your things and leave mouse droppings everywhere. It will be a huge mess, your things may begin to stink, and you could end up losing a lot of personal property because of the mice destroying it. Therefore, if you need to take a break to grab a small bite to eat, eat in your vehicle or outside of the unit in the parking lot.

Don't Stack Things Too High

A common mistake many people will make is stacking boxes and plastic tubs higher than they should be in an attempt to fit the most amount of stuff in there. This is an issue because those stacks can fall, which can result in someone becoming injured if they are standing in the unit at the time or a lot of your belongings becoming broken. To prevent any of that from happening, you might want to stick to keeping the stacks no higher than a little above your waist.

When you make use of those tips and any others that you come across, it will be a lot easier for you to make sure that your personal belongings are well protected while they are in the storage unit.
